Hard to believe this picture was taken at aprox. 10:00 PM. This was taken at the pass over the St. Elias/ Wrangle Mountains between Haines Junction, Yukon and Haines, Alaska. Yes it was cold. And eerily quiet. And spooky. I had just seen a wolverine. Kevin and Jason, whom you will soon meet, rode by here a half hour later and encountered a couple of bears near here.
I had reached Haines Junction a few hours earlier, and had to decide whether to keep riding out into the middle of nowhere, or turn right, go to Haines, and try to catch a ferry back to the states. Given the shape my bike and I were in, I decided it might be smarter, though less adventurous to take the easy way home. Checked into the " Thunderbird" hotel in Haines at about midnight. Next morning, called the ferry, and was lucky enough to get on that day. Turned out, I was one of 5 bikers heading south on that ferry. Could'nt get a cabin, but I could camp out on the solarium deck. Now I could get off my aching ankle for a few days.
